I have just added WP to an existing site: http://www.alleventsadviser.com/blog. The hosting service is godaddy. The installation went well, the pretty permalinks for the posts work great; /%category%/%postname%-%post_id%.htm I can edit and publish a post, comments and a Page (like an “About” page) fine within cpanel and set up categories OK. I have used wordpress.com for a blog before but this is the first time to actually setup a WP enabled site.

The problem is that on the blog home page sidebar, a click on a category page or the “about” type page gives a totally blank gray screen with Firefox and a “page not found” error with IE6. The htaccess file looks fine, I have cleared the cache and have been working on this for two days.

I have read many threads on related topics (permalinks, htaccess, blank page) and tried all suggestions, nothing has worked. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

I also added a category and tag base but this also was no help in fixing the problem.

Does anyone have another idea to try????

    thanks,

OK, I have un_installed and re-installed WP. Still same problem. The problem, which is the “about”, “category” and “archives” pages are not being found once I start using custom permalinks. Initially when the “default” permalinks are used, this problem DOES NOT exist. It starts only after I choose any of the other selections of friendly permalinks.

    HELP please!

When accessing the About page*, it returns ‘HTTP/1.x 404 /missing.html’ in the HTTP status, so I am suspecting that there’s something wrong with your .htacess file.

*it does exist, but when pointing to ?p=2 it redirects to /about again.

Thanks haochi for checking, still no fix. I also tried changing the custom permalink structure /index.php/%category%/%postname%-%post_id%.htm
Then the posts do not even work.

I can go back to the default permalinks settings and both posts and pages display OK. However I would prefer to use permalinks.

So is the /index.php/ really needed for custom permalinks?? When I tried this it did not work.

Can anyone tell me how the about, categories and archive pages are generated as compared to the posts and post comments? It’s interesting that the posts work with the custom permalinks but the pages do not!
