Support » Plugin: The Events Calendar » Overpriced Pro Version

  • Okay, the free version is lacking in a bit of functionality compared to the free version of similar plugins. Modern Tribe puts all of the good features in paid addons. And their pricing is considerably higher than most of their competitors for those paid plugins.

There is no functionality in the free version for styling your calendar. To style it, you have to be a CSS expert in order for the calendar to fit the look/style of your web site. They do offer a “themers guide”, but again, unless you’re a CSS expert, don’t expect it to be easy. Minus one star.

There is no way to format the output how you want it in the free version. So if you use the shortcode to display a list of events, you can’t display them the way you want. Again, this is available in the paid version. But the free version should at least let you make the calendar look the way you want it to. Minus one star.

Support from Modern Tribe is excellent, free or paid. I use several paid addons for a couple of clients and the level of support I’ve got from them is just as good with the free version (albeit a bit slower) as it is with the paid support.

And yes, I have a serious problem with the cost of the addons. To get a decent functioning calendar can cost several hundred dollars a year for even a single web site. A lot of paid features from Modern Tribe are included in the free versions of competing calendar plugins.

    Hi @dnavarrojr,

We appreciate the review and I’m really stoked that you rate our support highly as this is something we take great pride in.

That said, I was a little sad to see a 2-star review coming in … however these are often an excellent opportunity for us to improve.

I’m curious: given this review space is really for rating our free, core plugin – The Events Calendar itself – rather than our premium plugins (which are completely optional extras not distributed via the plugin directory) – I was curious if your rating was mostly on the low side because of the price point for Events Calendar PRO, or if it was also driven by your experience of of The Events Calendar?

Either way, we’d love to learn a little more with a view to improving in the future 🙂

    Hi Barry,

You are right, it was unfair to rate the free version based on the cost of the paid stuff. So I completely redid my review.

So… Modern Tribe support is excellent, free or paid. But for what you get in functionality the paid products are wildly overpriced compared to competitors. I have numerous clients using TEC paid addons and I am slowly switching them over to Events Organiser which has a much better ROI, although the support isn’t quite as good as TEC, they do offer good support and more bang for the buck.

I really appreciate you taking the time to do that, Dave, and for sharing this sort of feedback with us: it’s one of the best ways we have of making sure we’re headed in the right direction.

If I may, I’d like to address one other point:

There is no functionality in the free version for styling your calendar. To style it, you have to be a CSS expert in order for the calendar to fit the look/style of your web site.

I disagree here: there is functionality for exactly this purpose.

Using only The Events Calendar (again, just the free version – no premium upgrade required) you can simply visit the Appearance → Customize admin screen and find that we’ve added a bunch of options there targeting the calendar specifically.

It doesn’t cover absolutely everything (deliberately so, or it would be pretty overwhelming for many of our users) and yes, there are cases where custom CSS is still required or even preferable — but I do think this covers the basics and gives non-technical users a straightforward way to tune the calendar’s appearance to match other aspects of their site.

We could however do a better job of drawing attention to these facilities.

I am slowly switching them over to Events Organiser which has a much better ROI, although the support isn’t quite as good as TEC, they do offer good support and more bang for the buck.

I’m sorry to hear that, but once again I really appreciate all the feedback you’ve provided … perhaps over the course of a few more releases we’ll be able to win you back!
