I HAD to update some things on the site, our web gal left us high and dry and we don’t have a new one yet… smaller company here. I made some font changes based on my extremely limited HTML skills from 10 years ago, and some googling on CSS.

Apparently, none of my CSS changes I thought were working. WRONG. It just takes them, I dunno, 12 hours to take effect? Some googling has led me to believe I need to make a change in either Dreamhost, WP Super Cache, Varnish (or HTTP Varnish Purge?) or somewhere else to be able to see my CSS changes faster, and remove the horribly large text I created on the site before the boss notices. CTRL+F5 and clearing browser caches, using new devices, etc does not work.

Help, which is most likely the culprit and whats the fastest way to fix? I found WP Super Cache and “purged” and disabled it… no effect. It also says Varnish is running but I don’t see a similar way to purge. And I know our host is Dreamhost, I think I could find the username and password if I need to go in there for some reason…

    Thanks in advance!!

SOLVED!! There’s a basic button on the main home page that says EMPTY CACHE, which I believe gets added from Varnish HTTP Purge. Click it, ya’ll. Woot! Thanks.

    That is correct 🙂

FWIW, if you’re on DreamPress then the Varnish service handles your static content cache, much like WP Super Cache would, only on the server itself instead of a plugin. What the Varnish HTTP Purge plugin does is teach WordPress how to talk to Varnish, so when you add a post, it will flush the related content.

However. If you happen do things outside of WP (like edit CSS in your theme directly) then you either have to wait a few hours or press that Empty Cache button 🙁

If you see that some database changes (like options on the dashboard) aren’t updating, hit up tech support and ask them to empty Memcached, which is what caches the database.

I know! All these weird moving parts! We tried to build out DreamPress to have low friction 🙁
