I am using the powerpress plugin for my podcast, but for my iTunes category I do not want to use the subcategories provided, just the main category. Example:
Technology NOT Technology > Tech News.
As far as I see it I cannot do that through the powerpress dashboard (it is an allowed category option by iTunes, fyi).

Is there a way to overwrite what powerpress puts in my rss feed for category and allow me to insert what I want?

    protolexus,

Is there a reason you need to select the top level category without a sub category? It’s not allowed according to iTunes.

Apple has been updating their website the past 4 months, so things are no longer where they used to be. Here is a link to the December 2015 specs.html for iTunes podcast RSS specs on Internet archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20160209220607/http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/specs.html Under the <category> section look for “You must also define a subcategory if one is available within your category.”.

    Thank you for the response!

I guess I did not want a subcategory because my show (interviews developers in Philadelphia) did not align with any of the subcategories. But I did just read in your link that it gets more exposure on iTunes if it has a subcategory, so I guess it is fine if it not “exactly” right. I’ll keep the subcategory in that case, thanks again!

No problem. By the way the new Google Play tags only have top level categories, there are no sub categories.
