Support » Fixing WordPress » Organizing a lot of photos

  • Hello!

I’m going to handle a lot of photos (several thousands) and I need them to be categorised in categories and such.

I’ve understood it that otherwise photos are organised after uploading date?

Is it anything I can fix myself without using a plugin? Or is a plugin like enhanced-media-library something to recommend?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Hi,

This is my personal opinion. WordPress’ media library has improved massively over the years and is quite slick but for that amount of media you might need some additional management tools.
You’ve already identified that you need some means of categorising. I’d spend some more time working out what else you need to manage a library of that size and then look at using or writing a plugin to extend to the additional functions required.

When looking at plugins also look at more framework based ones. Eg http://pods.io/ allows for extending media with taxonomies I believe.

    Hope this helps somewhat šŸ™‚

    Hey!

Thanks for your answer! The thing is that I’m not sure I have the knowledge enough to create my own plugin. I was thinking that it might be solutions that I didn’t know of that might come with WP.

I might need to use plugins then, thanks for you input! šŸ™‚

Yes, it sounds like finding the right plugin is the right approach for you.

I just wanted to clarify that by default the media uploads are organized by the date of the post they are attached to. This usually is the same as the upload date unless you come back later and add media to an older post. In such cases, the added media will not be with the upload date, but with other media initially added to the post. Makes good sense when you look at it that way šŸ˜‰
