Support » Plugins » Ordering posts within specific categories

  • Is there a plugin or a way within WordPress itself to manually set the order posts will be listed within categories? I know there is a sticky facility within the quick edit for posts but that only sticks them to the top of the main blog page and not the category pages.

I have read that you can change the actual coding to display according to dates, etc but there will be no hard and fast rules as to what posts go where. Most will just need one of the posts stuck to the top of the category and then the rest of them in the normal order of date added.

  • What you describe is a standard feature of WordPress 2.7.

    Try this.
    1. Write a post in category, make sure you check the ‘Stick this post to the front’ under Visibility in the Publish module.
    2. Write another post in that same category but don’t make it ‘sticky’. This post will be ‘newer’ than the sticky.
    3. Change to the WordPress Default Theme
    4. Click on the link for the category you used, either the link in the sidebar under Categories, or the category listed under each post.
    5. You will be taken to the Category Archive and the sticky post will be first listed followed by the other posts in that category in descending date order.

    Hi Michael,

I have tried this and found it not to work. No posts sticky in the category archive. I’m running WordPress 2.7, flicked to the Default Theme just to confirm this, with no core hackery.

I’m also looking to accomplish this. As I’m looking to have ‘Featured’ posts for the specific category display at the top of the category.

Unfortunately I can’t link to show this as I’m developing the site locally.
