Hello there,
Actually my idea is to avoid caring about the file size too much and try to display images of high quality 🙂 I don’t think it hurts the SEO and doesn’t make the visitors run away. Of course not everyone has a fast connection and depending on your website the experience can be frustrating…
In my opinion, a page full of “photography” should be 3~4 mo maximum. If it’s a commercial website selling a product the max should be much less, around 300~500ko, since the goal is different.
My pages on totorotimes.com are quite heavy (very heavy actually) but nobody complained about it yet 🙂
If you want to optimize your images, you can also use a plugin called EWWW Image Optimizer or EWWW Image Optimizer Cloud. I actually use it, it works well with my retina plugin.
Another thing, I don’t like the fact that my photos are disconnected from my lightroom and in case I would like the option to upload them “bigger” later. For that, I am working on a plugin Lightroom / WordPress that handles the synchronisation. It actually works already but I would like to work on it more yet before selling it. If you are interested in synchronization between LR and WP, please contact me through meow.fr and you can become a beta tester for the plugin and of course it will be free forever 🙂

Thanks for the quick reply Jordy. And for the tip about EWWW Image Optimizer. I’ll experiment a bit. Image file size does impact SEO in terms of page load speed (I work in SEO). Hence my concerns. It’s always a balance.
I’ll ping you re the BETA test (Thanks for the offer)..
