Opening a portfolio item opens the file as well as the Popup Gallery

Opening a portfolio item opens a direct link to the file as well as the Popup Gallery view. The content source is images that are stored on the website. When I select an image in the gallery, it appears to open the file directly, but when I hit back in the browser, it goes back to the Popup Gallery. Do you have any guidance to make the gallery only open the Gallery?
