Because many people don’t have microsoft word on their computer or other doc reader, sites force download on default, but try this:

.doc files are not handled in browsers, you need to download it and have a program to run it.
That said, look at SkyDrive (Microsoft’s Cloud)

I am running OSX and Safari. If I click on the link from my Win 7 box another tab opens and asks if I want to run or save. If I pick run, word opens and the doc opens. If I open it on my iPad with safari the doc opens in a new tab and shows the file.
Does it seem like a osx/safari issue?
Are you talking about the document opening in Word on the local computer?

Yes, It seems open in different ways according to which OS/browser is used

Is there a way to get OSX\safari to open the way the others do?
No – and the user controls browser settings anyway.

Ok, thanks everyone for your help. Didn’t know if I was missing something. Obviously am newbie here.
No problem – and BTW, a PDF would be a better way to go than Word. You still don’t have absolute control, but they work better for more people.
