• UPDATE: Well, I was getting a bunch of errors in my debug log, and all pointed to the FG Joomla to WordPress. I keep it installed because if I turn it off, all my author aliases disappear. So I champed down hard on the bit and plunked down the Euros for the latest version. What a nightmare.

First, I tried to create a support account at FG’s support center, but I never got a confirmation email to verify my email. Nothing in Junk/Spam either. This means I can’t create a support ticket. Frederick also doesn’t answer any emails I’ve sent to his support email. When I updated to the latest version of FG Premium, support for author aliases disappeared completely (the ONLY reason I still keep this plugin installed). I had to downgrade back to v3.

UPDATE 2: Turns out all my emails were actually getting to FG support, but my email provider Comcast was discarding them without notification. I used the Comcast (Now Xfinity) webmail interface instead of my desktop email client, and there was nothing in the Junk/Spam folders from support. FG then used a different reply-to email that finally came through, with PDFs of their past responses to my earlier support requests. Foot in mouth, anyone? They are helping me with the issue, so let’s hope no more updates. Raising my rating.

    ***********************************

As you can see by the other reviews, people either hate it or love it. I’m a web developer who helps clients transition from Joomla to WP, and if the site is large, this thing stalls and quits constantly. The other bonus? You only get 3 months of updates, and you aren’t notified in the backend when any updates are available! Now I’m stuck with the buggiest version on the planet, and the developer, while giving you a LIFETIME license, only provides 3 months of updates.

What’s the use of having a lifetime license if you can’t get updates to fix all the bugs the developer created in the first place? Talk about having the consumer by the short hairs. There is also no discount program for people who have the so-called lifetime license, which would allow them to get updates at a discounted rate. You still have to PAY the full price again after only 3 months. More disturbing, the developer has the temerity to include a DONATE button on the PAID version!

Now–and this is important–if you bought the premium version, please note it doesn’t import items generated by popular third-party components. So if you have K2 or Joomfish or EasyBlog or Jcomments (and who doesn’t have JComments or JomComments on a blog) or sh404sef, you have to purchase more plugins. And they ain’t cheap either. A perfect example is Virtuemart, which will set you back another 69 Euros!

Worse still, if he does provide an update, you don’t get notified on the backend or even get a courtesy email from the developer to download the latest version before your subscription runs out. I had NO clue he had even updated the buggy plugins until it was too late and my 3 months were up. Sorry, but this is nothing but a greedy developer who provides a much-needed product at an exorbitant price for people transitioning from Joomla to WP.

    Dear Justin Boston (tneveu),

First, thank you for your feedback.
I’m going to answer all the points you raised.

    1. The 3 months of updates are clearly written on the product page: https://www.fredericgilles.net/fg-joomla-to-wordpress/
We firmly believe in and stand behind our product 100%. However, we understand that it cannot work perfectly for everyone all of the time. If it doesn’t work for you, you can open a ticket on https://www.fredericgilles.net/support/ and we will help you even after 3 months.

    2. The lifetime license means that the plugin will keep on working forever (even after 3 months).
You are NOT forced to repurchase the plugin after 3 months.

    3. About the discount program, there is no discount program right now. But we will think about it.

    4. The Donate button is a copy/paste from the free version: we will remove it from the Premium version in a next release. Thank you for pointing it out.

    5. About the add-ons, it is clearly written on: https://www.fredericgilles.net/fg-joomla-to-wordpress/ :
“The Premium version is working with a standard installation of Joomla and a standard installation of WordPress. If you are using Joomla extensions that you want to migrate as well, please have a look at the add-ons page.”

    6. The update notifications are automatic on the free version. But they are not automatic for the plugins that are not stored on wordpress.org. This is a feature that needs to be developed and that is already on our todo list.

Once again, thank you for your feedback. It will help us improve the plugin and our process.

In regard to the “stalls and quits constantly” issue, we encountered this but quickly realized that we could just hit the button to run the conversion again and the plugin would pick up where it left off. If I recall correctly, we had to run it three times to get everything converted, but as each run took only a few minutes, that was not a big deal.

So does that mean that the plugin is buggy? Don’t know. I *think* the issue was server timeouts, not a problem with the plugin as such. But it was so easy to just restart it that we never bothered to figure out the underlying issue.

    Thank you for your feedback.
There may be two causes of this problem: either a server timeout or a memory full. It doesn’t come from the plugin itself.
You are right. You just have to click again on the import button and it resumes the import where it left off.
