  • I kinda feel like what I am asking belies how “backward” I am in this process! But I was curious to know if the following is possible to do simply (even if it means going back in to wordpress.org, via a new template, and starting the process over again):

    1) I know that with a WP-template, I can go in and create a static page and make that my landing/main page, and then have the blog in an interior sub-page. Is this correct?

    2) But then can a two other sub-pages be added, with their own blogs?

    3) And can, say, all the interior blogs have their newest posts excerpted chronologically on the landing page, which was created with the static page in the original template?

    4) Lastly, is this something that can be easily done by transferring what may have already been created (in jerry-rigged fashion), or does it work best to start this process (of multi-blog pages within one site) at the beginning?

Thanks to whoever may be able to help (or send me in the right direction)!

    1) Yes πŸ™‚

    2) Not exactly. For them to be totally separate blogs, you’d want to use MultiSite. Otehrwise you’d have to use Custom Post Types (CPTs) or sort by categories. If you use MuiltiSite, then you’d want to use a SubFolder install which will mimic being ‘pages’ to the end user πŸ˜‰

    3) Multisite: Yes, with a plugin
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-sitewide-tags/

If you use CPTs or categories, it’d be different.

    4) Hard to say. If you’re starting with an existing blog and want to separate it into multiple, it really depends on how comfy you are with all this πŸ™‚

    Dear Ipstenu,

    One, thanx for replying!

Two, it was mostly a great help. But…

Three, like most of this to me: it’s like having a little sense of the Japanese language and then being thrown into Tokyo without a dictionary (or an English-speaking/writing person anywhere in sight!). So…

Four, I got “thrown” of easily by this part: “For them to be totally separate blogs”. That’s one of those to-just-this-side-of I think I know what you mean, and then I don’t. What I want in my site is to have separate sub-pages (blogs) that are editorially different, but in that they share the one commonality: me. However am I still in need of making each sub-page (blog) into its own “site” and then linking it to my landing page?

Five, I do have a website up that is already (kinda) separated into different “blog” parts. But it was put together (in a word: ass-backwards!) by someone else, who constructed it partly with WP and partly on his own. So its somewhat flimsy and dysfunctional. (Overall, if I have to wrest this way and do it on my own, which is where I am with it now, I am terribly UN-comfy with the process!)

Six, last thing I wanna do is bug you (unduly) about any of this. But youre definitely putting me on the right path!

Having been to Japan as a non Japanese speaker, the best advice I got was “Just jump in.” πŸ™‚ Yeah it’s scary, but until YOU just start trying some of this, you’re never going to know.

Also: Broad questions ALWAYS get broad answers. And sometimes specific ones do too, because rarely do two people have the exact same desires.

Okay. So “For them to be totally separate blogs” first.

MultiSite is the art of using ONE WordPress install to run MULTIPLE blogs. Full stop. Have you seen wordpress.com? It’s like that. Multiple separate sites.

If that IS NOT what you want, this is the wrong section for you.

    Ipstenu,

I have looked it overβ€”Multisite, that isβ€”and I am pretty sure it is pretty much exactlyu what I need. Or where I should have started a few months ago. Before letting a WordPress averse tech guy construct my site, to where I feel like its all “insides without and outside”.

So now its a matter of me going in and seeing if there’s anything salvageable about the existing site, wherein I can actually go in and not misstep to the point of misery. Or maybe I need to reconstruct entirely, starting with the one site install and building out.

If I had the time, money, I would say I should go back in and redo the entire thing. Cobbling seems fraught with peril.

In any case, thank you for your help. You really have helped to clarify my circumstances. Wish me luck!

    best

http://code.ipstenu.org/about/forhire/ (I keep a list of folks I know since I’m not for hire right now.)

Ipstenu, thanks so much for the link. As per and one last question (LOL): are there any in your list whom you’d recommend to someone working specifically with gay male content? In the scheme of things, it prolly matters not whether “gay” means anything. But I would rather go with a friend than a potential foe!

I’m a pretty open lesbian and everyone on that list knows it πŸ™‚ So I would say no worries THERE πŸ™‚

Ipstenu, that very good to know! XXX

it’s a true pleasure having made your acquaintance! And again, thanks for all your advice. Now let me see if I can put it to good use!
