One Other Thing…

  • Something else no one’s mentioned yet is that plugin updates don’t necessarily wipe out your customizations.

We’ve hacked WooCommerce, which is required for use with WooThemes’ free Wootique theme on our site, and are pleased that our small changes (little stuff like tab titles and so forth) have been preserved through every update this year: obviously, this plugin was developed with foresight!

  • When you do the customisations through your theme, by overriding the template files from there, your theme customisations are perfectly safe for when you update WooCommerce.

Read our information on Template Structure for more information on where all the files are located and how to override them: http://www.woothemes.com/woocommerce-docs/codex/template-structure/

Thanks for clarifying; “hacked” is the wrong word, giving the wrong impression: yes, WooCommerce has a built-in way to modify the plugin and keep the changes, so wonderfully “fire-and-forget-simple” that a year later I’ve even forgotten the details of what had been done!

No “hacking” is necessary…just follow the codex. About as close to having “child plugins” in WordPress as it’ll ever get!
