Support » Plugin: Advanced Custom Fields » one of the best custom field plugins for devs so far

    I used to use Meta Box plugin (metabox.io), but ACF beats it as of now by some margin because:

    – there’re no additional extensions to install;
    – there’s a lot of documentation;
    – the code for defining fields is much simpler;
    – a lot of hooks allow you to do anything you want;
    – unbeatable flexibility OOB — global fields? menu item fields? user fields? all taken care of;
    – UI is very good and flexible as hell, makes content editors happy;
    – wide integration with other plugins;
    – ACF Pro is freely available on Github for use with those clients which might not afford paying for it (though we do use the paid Pro as well for lots of them).

    Some deficiencies as well:

    – json sync was a major frustration because of some sync irregularities and problems. Had a talk with support and they were unable to help. Had to switch to PHP export, but that’s actually better since you can also use smart PHP logic which makes a project a lot leaner;
    – the Pro price would be a bit steep for novice developers;
    – some people from the support team are not very helpful (James Stout), though others do really good job (John A. Huebner II).

  • Hi,

    It’s Anh from Meta Box. I’m sorry that you have switched to another plugin. We are trying so hard to improve the plugins to satisfy the needs of developers better. We look forward to receiving your feedback.

    In 2017, the entire documentation of the Meta Box was rewritten to be easier to find and read. We have added a lot of code examples that you can just copy and paste.

    The reasons that we create many extensions instead of making AIO is to optimize the performance of your websites. If you put all of them into a plugin, you may have to load a lot of things that you do not really need. But if you want AIO solution, we have Meta Box AIO for you. So you have both choices.

    If you need UI to create custom fields, there are Online Generator<a/> and Meta Box Builder. Both can export PHP code for direct use in themes or plugins.

    Regarding integrating with other plugins, actually if other plugins work with normal custom fields of WordPress, it would work well with Meta Box. Because Meta Box uses the the same data structure of WordPress to store data (unlike ACF, ACF saves data in a non-compatible WordPress way). So other plugins by default will work just fine with Meta Box.

    Anyway, we’re sad to see you go. If you change your mind, we’re happy to work with you on future projects.

    Best regards,
    Anh

    Hey Anh! Thanks for commenting the review. I still feel like getting back Meta Box again at some point, so will definitely try out the new features and experience.
