  • What are the benefits of setting up a local host? What’s the average up time for a Dell Inspiron 5 years old, lower end model? Is a box better to use as a local host? Am I on the right track? A local host will keep me from paying for hosting for my sight? I just don’t want any down time. How would I setup my laptop to run around the clock? I don’t want it to burn out.

    Love, Bobby

No, a localhost environment will allow you to work with your site on your computer as if it were a live site, it’s popular for folks who want to work on the site without affecting the live site that people are currently visiting.

A localhost site will only be accessible on your computer, the public will not be able to access it. You will either need a hosting provider if you want your site to be publicly accessible, or you’ll need to configure a full server environment on your laptop, meaning you won’t be able to use it for normal personal computer things. (and personally, I don’t recommend running such a thing off of a laptop and home internet, that might even be a violation of your ISP’s terms)

We have a few recommended hosting providers, and if you really want a free blog, try WordPress.com instead.
