Old link checker becomes active by itself
-
Hello, we are using the new (cloud) BLC but after a few days the old local BLC becomes actives. I am the administrator and there is one editor account that has access to BLC. I am not sure what triggers this change because I know once the cloud is active, you have to turn the old engine on manually to make it active again, however for me for some reason this switch happens automatically and without our doing. Today on my dashboard I saw BLC said that 277 links were broken, and I clicked on them, and the old engine was active. I went to the cloud and then activated that again.
This is very annoying as I do not want the old engine to scan and take up server resources. I would rather just use the cloud.
The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

Hi @hbk747,
That’s an odd behaviour. In general such an issue shouldn’t have occurred. Does it switch back at random? or it switches back after any specific action? like after a scan etc?
Could we know what’s the current PHP version thats running on the website? If you could copy the Site Info under Tools > Site Health > Info, and by clicking the “Copy site info to clipboard” button, then it would be helpful.
You can use Google Drive, Pastebin or any such cloud services to share the Site Info in the next reply.
Looking forward to your response.
Regards,
Nithin
Honestly, I am not sure when it happens. I just checked my admin account and the scan ran on 29th Sep for 3 hours and everything seems fine. However, randomly the old checker becomes active. Yesterday, one of our editors (who uses a separate WP account) was saying that the cloud scanner was not running due to “too many server errors”. Not sure if this is related to the issue.
Anyway, here is the information you wanted: https://pastebin.com/Bam9Ff7B
Not sure if this is related to different WP accounts (admin and editors) having access to BLC.
Hope you can help.
Warm regards
Hello @hbk747,
I hope everything is going well for you. I am truly sorry to hear about the issue.
I tested on my own site but couldn’t reproduce this behaviour. I also checked the internal hub logs and BLC logs. I enabled debug mode in the test site’s BLC >> local >> settings, but it didn’t capture the switch from cloud to local engine. I tried several activity plugins, but none of them recorded that either.
Finally, I want to point out that we need the server access logs, which can help narrow down the problem because they will show when someone accessed this URL:
wp-admin/admin.php?page=blc_local. With that information, we can determine the cause of this issue.Would it be possible for you to share the access log and the approximate timing of when it automatically switched to local mode?

Imran KhanHello,
I have asked Cloudways to send me the server access logs but because this happened a week or so back, and I am not sure of the exact time, it might be a bit tricky. I want to add here another issue (if you want I can make another thread but it could be related): The blc cloud checker started a scan by itself although I have set the time to 5 am on the blc cloud settings. This should mean 5 am local (my) time correct? I am not sure why but my cpu usage was very high right and cloudways told me that traffic is high and blc’s spider is crawling the website. It is currently around 9 pm here. I asked both my editors and they said that they did not initiate a manual scan. Neither did I.
Here is a screenshot of the scan running:
https://ibb.co/KxXMCmtgHere is what Cloudways told me:
165.227.127.103 – – [30/Sep/2025:15:35:40 +0000] “GET /us-deportation/ HTTP/1.0” 200 80178 “-” “WPMU DEV Broken Link Checker Spider”
165.227.127.103 – – [30/Sep/2025:15:35:40 +0000] “GET /author/noor-ul-sabah/ HTTP/1.0” 200 66006 “-” “WPMU DEV Broken Link Checker Spider”
165.227.127.103 – – [30/Sep/2025:15:35:40 +0000] “GET /modern-conflicts/ HTTP/1.0” 200 78940 “-” “WPMU DEV Broken Link Checker Spider”
165.227.127.103 – – [30/Sep/2025:15:35:40 +0000] “GET /epstein-files/ HTTP/1.0” 200 84972 “-” “WPMU DEV Broken Link Checker Spider”
165.227.127.103 – – [30/Sep/2025:15:35:40 +0000] “GET /russia-us-summit/ HTTP/1.0” 200 81124 “-” “WPMU DEV Broken Link Checker Spider”The issue is the time. I set the time for 5 am due to minimal traffic being active at that time. Because of high traffic right now plus blc scan taking place, it caused the website to become extremely slow. I could hardly access the WP dashboard. I had to disable the plugin again.
Cloudways will send me the server access logs for the past ten days but I do have the server access logs for today if that will help. You can find them here: https://limewire.com/d/dF2Y2#Svl90WmtNr
Warm regards,
Hi @hbk747 ,
I hope you’re doing well.
Regarding the initial issue, I can only see the following IP accessing the BLC page where you can switch between local/cloud > 154.192.1.32
Do you recognize that IP?
Regarding when this runs, you should be able to see the timezone set for Broken Link Checker and the time based on that timezone when setting up the scheduled scan – https://snipboard.io/v6Xx91.jpg
You can confirm it there, but if you need further help with this, please start a new, separate topic so we can have things in order and be able to properly focus on each issue.
I hope this helps.
Best Regards,
Williams ValerioHello,
Thats my IP but again I have not been switching from the cloud to the old one – it has happened 2-3 times by itself. So not sure why this is happening. Is there anything else we can do to figure this out or should I just send you the access logs or some other information for when it happens next?
Edit: For the scan time issue, I am creating a separate topic.

Hi @hbk747,
We were unable to replicate the issue on a test website, and there aren’t any similar reports, which indicates this might be an issue specific to your website.
Please share the access log if the issue happens again, so that we can diagnose the issue further.
Best Regards,
Nebu JohnHello,
You can find the access logs for the last 10 days here https://limewire.com/d/e1JJq#JCUFgNQaVs
Hi @hbk747,
I’m afraid there isn’t much info in the access logs related to BLC that we could find. However, I was able to notice the following log:
139.135.59.13 - - [28/Sep/2025:17:27:39 +0000] "GET /wp-admin/admin.php?page=blc_local HTTP/1.0" 302 929 "https://www.XXXXX/wp-admin/admin.php?page=blc_dash" "Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; CPU OS 18_5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/605.1.15 (KHTML, like Gecko) CriOS/138.0.7204.156 Mobile/15E148 Safari/604.1"
139.135.59.13 - - [28/Sep/2025:17:27:40 +0000] "GET /wp-login.php?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.xxxx.pk%2Fwp-admin%2Fadmin.php%3Fpage%3Dblc_local&reauth=1 HTTP/1.0" 404 1140 "https://www.xxx.pk/wp-admin/admin.php?page=blc_dash" "Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; CPU OS 18_5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/605.1.15 (KHTML, like Gecko) CriOS/138.0.7204.156 Mobile/15E148 Safari/604.1"Seems like an action from iPad. I suppose there are more than one admin in the site? Could you please check if there any actions performed from a different admin when it comes to switching the BLC versions?
Regards,
Nithin
Hello,
Yes this IP is from one of our admin/editor accounts and has access to BLC but the person who uses this account says that she did not switch from cloud to old – I believe this because I have already told them to not turn on local engine on now. This is beneficial for them as well because they have to edit articles and the local engine would make the website slower. If the switch happens again I will share the logs with you and go through them myself.
I guess theres nothing more that can be done. I just hope its not a bug because BLC is not scanning at the right time as well so (I have a separate ticket for that).
Hi @hbk747
In case it keeps happening, can you install the https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-security-audit-log/ and keep monitoring the plugin for the next days?
I hope it can catch why it is happening.
Let us know how it goes.
Best Regards
