Is it OK to use the older version of a parent theme, if that older version still passes according to Theme Check plugin? I have created a very custom child theme for the theme Inkblot. There were no Inkblot updates for quite some time. The new update is major, and it has significant changes. It does not work at all anymore with my child theme. I tried to incorporate the two, but to no avail. The structure has changed, and my child theme is based on the old structure. If I update to the new parent theme, I would have to start from scratch with my child theme, erasing months of development. I just thought to run Theme Check and it says the old theme passes the test. So, is it OK to keep using the old one?

My initial answer is that you shouldn’t have any issues using an older theme. Running theme check is a great way to see if it’s still good. However, it’s not a guaranteed pass.

What I would do is check the changelog (assuming there is one) of the theme to see what the changes were to the newer versions. But don’t look for cosmetic or structural changes. See if there were certain bug fixes or security patches that led to the update. If those types of things were the reason for the major update, then that’s definitely something to be concerned with.

If that’s not the case, though, nothing wrong with using the older version.
