• The site consists of two pages – Home and Contact. There are two links within the Home page – Prequel and Signup. The off-canvas menu on the Home page will not take me to the Prequel or Signup links, just the Contact page. However, I can access Prequel or Signups from the Contact page. Something is clearly amiss.

Has anyone come across this problem before and resolved it, or perhaps can see what the problem might be?

If not, is it feasible to create a duplicate of the site and give the menu developer admin credentials to resolve a problem from his end?

  • I recommend getting in touch with Elementors’s support about this via https://elementor.com/support/ if you have Elementor Pro or https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/elementor/ if you do not.

I thought this would be more a WordPress thing, seeing the menu integrates into WordPress, not Elementor. It’s not an Elementor plugin.

How about the second part, about duplicating the site to give the menu developer admin credentials to resolve the problem from his end?

The problem arises from the link to the anchors. These must also be provided by Elementor. I know from the past that there have often been problems with Elementor when doing this. Hence my tip.

You can of course copy the website at any time and run tests on it. Either your host offers something for this (usually called staging or dev). Or you can use WP Staging: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-staging/ (which requires sufficient free disk space in the hosting). Or you can copy the project to a completely different hosting, e.g. using a backup. The path is up to you.

I want to give the developer access to a cloned site without giving access to the site itself, and from what I can see, staging creates a sub folder in WP, meaning he would need access to the whole site. What did you mean by “Or you can copy the project to a completely different hosting, e.g. using a backup”?

Create a copy of the project, e.g. using a backup plugin, and make this copy available to the developer. Let him then see how he can get it to run. I usually do this locally on my computer.

Pardon me for appearing a little dense here, but you’re going over my head. So, there are “backup plugin”s that can place the WP files on my laptop, which I can then send on to the developer. Right? May I ask then, if you could point me in the direction of one or two such plugins so I can get this sorted. I’m hoping this will not be an overlarge set of files.

Actually, the developer should be able to help you with something like this so that you don’t have to worry about it 🙂 This would also have the advantage that he can tell you what he needs from you and how you can send it to him.

I like to do this with this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/updraftplus/ – you install it in the backend of your WordPress and activate it. Then go to UpdraftPlus and click on the big “Backup now” button and confirm this once. The plugin then creates a backup of the database and the files from your project. When it’s finished, it shows you the backup in a table below. You can then download the individual files to your computer. You then give these to the developer and tell them how you created them. He should then know how to handle them.

You can also find instructions from the developer of the plugin here: https://teamupdraft.com/blog/how-to-backup-a-wordpress-site/#step-1-install-and-activate-updraftplus

If you have problems with this, I would again recommend that you contact the developer you want to involve in the project.
