When u click on the upper right side to check your messages the number of unread messages in blue is not showing any more.

works for me, tested paid and free version of plugin. no idea what can be wrong for you.
OK when i diactivate the BP better messages plugin i can see the number of messages again. Is there some setting in the BP better messages plugin that is resposible for this function?
nope, all should work out of the box.
Did you just activated plugin or using it already for some time?
I have been using it for almost a year now. I dont know it seems like it is only me who is having this issue.
create support ticket if you wanna to investigate.
