Support » Networking WordPress » Nothing happens when creating a Network for multisite

  • Hi everyone!

I am trying to create a Network for using my wordpress [ redundant link removed ] as a multisite. I have followed all the steps, modifying the .htaccess and wp-config but nothing happens when I exit and relogin. There’s no “my sites” or anything…
When I access tools -> Network it says that there’s already a network set up but I can’t see “my sites” anywhere.

    Any help?

    Thank you very much,
    Miguel Gisbert

  • How many sites did you create so far?

Thanks lombino for joining this post. I think it’s exactly the same problem, I’m trying to install the Network on localhost now and I’m getting the same. I tried two different paid hosting as well, so it isn’t something related with the server.
I am receiving this warning in localhost:
Warning: Constant MULTISITE already defined in C:\xampp\htdocs\wordpress\wp-config.php on line 95

Could it be about the wordpress version? Is it possible that wordpress does not allow that anymore?

    Thank you,
    Miguel

I’m going to go out on a limb here with a bit of confidence in what I do know…

I have two multisites running here, one is a very neat multinetwork multisite while the other is a standard multisite. Though they started life as very early (pre-5.0 version) WordPress sites they have been updated as the new releases have appeared. Both are running the latest versions and I use those daily.

If you are running on some flavor of Linux with Apache as a webhost and your host is capable of running WordPress I’d expect your sites to be capable of running multisite.

So let’s look somewhere else for a problem.

@mgo3 I see several plugins running on your site including some kind of ‘builder’ plugin. I’d turn off every plugin before I switched to multisite and tested the same.

I also think you might need to try to add a site as, if the site is not a multisite yet, then you won’t be able to add the new site to the network.

Looking at your site according to the URL you gave… It would be good to know a bit more about the environment the multisite is on as I see an Nginx webserver out front of the site… I have no way to tell if that is just a proxy or is the webserver.

Some of those htaccess directives need to be converted to Nginx configuration directives as Nginx can’t deal with htaccess files even though the underlying Linux understands it.

@lombino Unless a local host is setting on my workbench I shy away from localhost questions as they can be quite tough to work with away from the local network itself. That’s why I suggested a separate topic as your situation is not the same as a hosted site.

Still, a local host multisite seems to be right cool and doable so I don’t want to discourage you.

@lombino If you need support then per the forum guidelines please start your own topic.

A lot more people will see your post, and that way you stand a good chance of getting the assistance you want. Despite any similarity in symptoms, your issue is likely to be completely different because of possible differences in physical servers, accounts, hosts, plugins, theme, configurations, etc. Thus one problem, on one setup is not indicative of the functionality and reliability of an application as a whole: https://wordpress.org/support/forum-user-guide/faq/#i-have-the-same-problem-can-i-just-reply-to-someone-elses-post-with-me-too

Thank you for the answer @jnashhawkins, I have disabled all the plugins before the network installation and I did it as well on a clean wordpress installation on local and the result is the same: it says that a network is already configured but nothing changes at wp-admin. I don’t know about Nginx but the server is using the htaccess file because I use it to force SSL connection despite the url entered by the user.

    Thank you,
    Miguel

Thanks for the info i will try to figure it out for more
