I installed Quick Cache as instructed, then logged out. No verifying QC text on page.

Cache directory exists, permissions correct. Manually added WP_CACHE True line to wp-config.php, which was in another place. Still no verifying text, and only 10B in Cache directory.

    What should I do next?

    Thanks

Now, after deactivating and reactivating, cache material is beginning to accumulate in the cache directory, but there is still no confirming text on the home page and no discernible change in page loading time yet.

Now we’re cooking! Page load time down to 1.5 sec from 5 even after brief rebuild time. Took a day for confirming QC text to show up on front page, and it doesn’t show between/until after rebuilds, I see now. Deactivating and reactivating seemed to be the ticket for me. Very happy so far.

Now the front page, at least, doesn’t seem to be being re-cached (no verifying text, slow load speed) after a new post and a comment over 30 minutes ago, leaving several questions.

    – How fast is a page supposed to re-cached and available to be served as a cached page after it changes, eg, after a new post or comment is added?

    – Do spam comments trigger the re-caching process?

    – Are changed items wiped and re-cached individually?

The default automatic Expiration Time is 7 days, which you can change in Dashboard → Quick Cache → Directory / Expiration Time.

If someone posts a comment, they are considered logged-in and not served any cache anywhere on the site. (If they clear their browser cookies and visit the site again, they will be considered logged-out and will be served the cache.) Note that this behavior can be changed in the Pro version–i.e., you can enable caching for logged-in users in the Pro version.

If a new post is added, the Home Page cache and Posts Page cache is cleared.

If a comment is posted, the cache for that post is cleared (so other visitors can see the newly posted comment).

    – Do spam comments trigger the re-caching process?

    No, they do not.

    – Are changed items wiped and re-cached individually?

Yes, see my reply to the first question.
