Support » Plugin: Co-Authors Plus » Not User Friendly

I installed the plug-in, read the documentation and then …. searched in frustration for the the_authors template tag. It turns out the theme I use does not have a the_authors tag but instead uses get_the_authors tag to set a variable called $authors. I modified that but then realised I had to change several other pieces of code — in a commercial theme. Which means at the next theme update/patch — because WordPress themes often contain glaring security holes — I would lose ALL those changes.

From what I have read it’s considered the poor practice to modify them code directly and that instead of child themes should be used. However, I see no way to access the template tags via the child theme.

Any chance the plug can be written in a way that avoids modification of a parent theme?
