  • I love the ideas behind Gutenberg, but currently it is not user friendly and still a bit buggy.

Bugs I can understand, but hiding options/controls unless you hover on just the right spot is a terrible idea! Sure, it creates a nice clean look, but it really confuses many people, especially those who are less computer-savvy (most of my clients). People need to be able to see what options they have for editing their page – this is especially important for people who will only use it a few time a year to update their company websites.

I still have high hopes for Gutenberg, but currently it is just not user-friendly enough for my clients. Luckily the classic editor is still an option!

Edited from 2 to 1 star: I cannot believe this went live. My 2-Star review was based on this being a work in progress, well that progress has fallen far short of what you would expect for something implemented in core!

@joegestalt thanks for taking the time to review. I would love to dig a little more into what options you felt should be there but hiding. Which area did you feel this the most in or was it throughout the experience?

I believe options should not be hiding! Specifically:

    • add block between blocks
    • add block at end
    • more options menu for blocks
    • button to reorder blocks on left

Also, the “add blocks” menu, being an accordion-style menu, does not allow clients to easily see all options available to them. Options like bullet-point lists, horizontal lines etc. are hidden away in the “add blocks” menu, rather than the text editor menu.

Also, some options no longer exist at all, like choosing a page when inserting a link.

It’s fine for me, because I took the time to learn the program, but the classic editor is so much easier for clients who rarely use WordPress, are not good with computers, and/or are more used to a MS Word type program.
