    You should read the FAQ:

    Why WordPress Popular Posts?
The idea of creating this plugin came from the need to know how many people were actually reading each post. Unfortunately, WordPress doesn’t keep views count of your posts anywhere. Because of that, and since I didn’t find anything that would suit my needs, I ended up creating WordPress Popular Posts: a highly customizable, easy-to-use WordPress plugin with the ability to keep track of what’s popular to showcase it to the visitors!

WordPress keeps count of visits just fine. I’m using now “My Popular Posts Widget” which has only 386 downloads so far agains this plugin 760,525. “My Popular Posts Widget” is so basic and easy, but does needed job just fine without making bulky WordPress even more slower. That’s why I gave 5 stars to “My Popular Posts Widget” and 1 star to “WordPress Popular Posts”.

Alright, I guess. That’s the beauty of WordPress: there are choices for everyone 🙂

@blogoguru If it is true that WordPress keeps counts of visits without an additional plugin, can you kindly indicate in which table is this count held?

It doesn’t. The plugin he cites uses comment counts for popularity — *not* visits/views. These plugins do not do the same thing.
