Support » Plugin: Security & Firewall - MalCare Security » Not impressed …

  • When I recently took over running a website from someone else. I set up login notifications, so I knew that I had been hacked almost as soon as it happened. I blocked the hacker’s IP, but wanted to clean up anything they had done, and stop future access. I had already installed the Malcare plugin to try it out, so I ran it to see what it came up with. It found two problems, but gave no indication as to what they were, just an invitation to use their paid version. It’s a low budget website, so coughing up $99 wasn’t an attractive option.

I do have online and offline backups, but obviously it’s better to address what went wrong, so I tried another malware scanner whose free version actually tells you which files have malware signatures or are otherwise suspicious. There were more than two of them.

They included a plugin which I replaced. The manual clean up of other files via ftp was straightforward. I also changed emails, usernames, and SQL and user passwords, in case these had been harvested. I then did the spring clean that I should have done when I took over the website, and found a legacy file that ought to have been deleted, so it was probably either that or the plugin.

In summary, if are just looking for a helping hand to quickly spot what has gone wrong so that you can sort it yourself, the free version of Malcare won’t provide it.
