If I leave my permalinks on the default selection I get no error when I try to view a page. If I select any other permalink structure I get the above error message.

All I can find on this forum is that I need to change my .htaccess file to the code suggested in (like an error message) at the bottom of my permalinks when I try to save my selection post name. (ie “If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file. Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all.”

I don’t think wordpress 4.0 created a .htaccess file when I installed it? So I wrote one with the suggested code and I get an “Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.”

All I want is my permalinks to look like this http://mywebsite.com/Weight-Loss instead of http://mywebsite.com/?page_id=19 .
How can I do this in WordPress 4.0?

    Thanks

  • Is this running on a yahoo business hosting account by any chance?

No, it is not running on yahoo business hosting account. It is on a VPS server. It is a simple stand alone website only a few pages. Nothing complicated.

This appears to be a bug with 4.0. I think I will just try to find a copy of an older version, remove 4.0, and install the older good running one.

It would seem that when they designed 4.0 they would have allowed for listing the /pagename ? Instead of the /?page_id=19 or something?

“Internal Server Error” means you created the blank .htaccess file with the wrong character encoding. Create a new, empty .htaccess file directly on the server using FTP and that will give you a file with the correct encoding. Then try and save your permalinks from the WP backend.

Or, the wider issue may be that your VPS needs to be configured in httpd.conf to read .htaccess files. Is this a managed or unmanaged VPS?

    Thanks!

I finally figured it out. There was no .htaccess created on my server. So I created a blank one (name only), did a chmod to 777 from 644, and then selected the permalinks I wanted. It worked! Then I chmod the .htaccess to 644
