Support » Plugin: WordPress Gallery Plugin - NextGEN Gallery » Nice plugin, confusingly asking for a rating..

  • They ask and directly link to PUSH you to give them a 5-star rating.. not a nice practice.. I’m confused should I give them 5/4/3/2…

I don’t like pushing for the highest forcefully via pop-ups high on my admin panel (Hey admin, you’ve created 3 NextGEN galleries! Awesome! Could I ask you to give us a 5-star rating really quickly on WordPress.org? It helps other WordPress users and motivates us to keep improving. You can also just send us feedback here. Thanks! ~ Erick Danzer (founder of Imagely/NextGEN Gallery

    ??? Confused still

  • Hey @rafy777, thanks for your review! Just a few quick thoughts:

First, just to clarify, is your 2-star review due entirely to the fact that we’ve asked users to leave us a positive review? Or is it an overall review of the plugin?

You are super welcome to leave a review at whatever level you feel accurately reflects your experience. But I might ask this: if you are having an otherwise positive experience with the plugin, and your main concern is that we ask for a review, do you really think that warrants 2 stars? If not, could you consider bumping your rating up?

Second, asking people to review a product they’re using is a really common practice in the internet era of online reviews. That’s true for all kinds of products, and its true for lots of WordPress plugins as well.

Third, if users ARE having a bad experience with our plugin and they see our notice, can’t they easily follow the link here and give us a negative review (as you just did)? Nothing forces users to leave a positive review, or to leave a review at all. It’s just a request.

Finally, and perhaps a smaller point to make, we currently build and support a large and complex software product, which we give away for free under an open source license which mean anyone who wants can just copy it. We actively support over 1 million+ users of that software, also for free.

Honestly, if you and others are using free software (often for long periods, and some also using free support) I don’t think it’s too much to ask to consider taking 5 minutes to come and leave a review.

I have the impression you are genuinely concerned or confused or looking for an explanation. Hopefully my response helps put your mind at ease.

Regardless, thanks for using the plugin!

Hey Eric, glad to actually hear from you and your reply is much appreciated!

Your plugin is very nice, the original review is based on the fact that you specifically asked for a (5-star) review and not just any review.

Yes indeed I can consider re-rating it upwards, up to 5-stars. Now I’ll up it to 3 because this is a 50/50 feeling, and you are a professional in your reply. I’ll up it to 5 if you “just ask for a review” and not “a 5-star” review. This made me feeling mixed up.

I respect the asking for a review, you DESERVE a very good rating, you set the standard 🙂

Your understanding for my concerns were right on spot, I salute you!

    Thanks a million..

Tell you what, I’ll make it a 4-star, it’s more than enough you listened. Please just take my note as a reminder of how some people might feel, and therefore “not” rate. Perhaps you can try to change the wording and then make a test on the influence of the numbers of positive rating over a month, and choose the best for you.

I wish you the VERY BEST, and THANKS 🙂

Thank you for understanding, @rafy777 🙂 We appreciate your willingness to adjust the star rating. I’m not sure if you intended to follow through, if so, the star rating still appears to be 2. Just wanted to alert you on that. Thanks again for replying back to us 🙂 We will definitely make note of your feedback.
