• We’re in the process of moving our website over to a new host and after doing a backup of all of my sites files/folders and uploading them to the new hosts servers, none of the pages, menus and such are working. The theme I’m using seems to be there, as are all plugins (currently deactivated) and is working, but it’s as if it’s a first time install for everything. I hope this makes since. Please visit the links to each below to see for yourself.

    Current website host URL: http://www.thegalleysink.com

    Temporary site URL setup with new host: http://galley6732.wpengine.com/

    I am communicating with our new host about this, but wanted to pose the question in here also. I would think since I moved all of my WordPress files/folders over to them, the site should be, for the most part, in tact and displaying correctly?

  • Did you follow the instructions in Moving_WordPress?

    It looks as though I did follow those instructions for the most part. We are keeping the same domain name, but do not want to point it to the new server until everything is running and looking right and currently, it is not. All WP files/folders were moved into the root directory of the new host, the same as with the current live sites host.

    I’ve looked in several of the folders on the new server, the folders and images contained in those folders are there. What else should I be looking at to determine why the menus and pages I’ve created are not?

    for the most part

    So what parts didn’t you follow?

    I’m not sure. I’m not an expert with WordPress on the back end. Is there nothing you can suggest for me to look at to potentially fix this issue? I would think if I screwed up something myself while migrating my files over, the theme and plugins wouldn’t work and/or be there.

    Go through the steps in Moving_WordPress and let us know which ones you did not follow. We cannot help until we know what you did – and didn’t – do.

    Which one of those avenues in the link you provided should I have focused on going with for my situation? I’m not pulling the current site down right now and not pointing the domain name to the new server until the site looks right on the new one.

    I didn’t change anything with regards to any of my WP files before uploading them to the root directory on the new server. I backed all of my WP site files to my local machine, set up a connection to the new hosts servers and then uploaded the files where they needed to go. Hope that helps some.

    It looks like based on that link, what I didn’t do is a backup of my sites database with the current site host. I have just done a backup though. I guess I figured there would be a new database setup by the new host, being that they are a host geared towards WordPress websites and had already set up an entire WordPress in my root directory for me before I moved all of my existing WP site files/folders over.

    So you changed the site urls and updated the wp-config.php file?

    Thread Starter Drew75

    (@drew75)

    If by that, you mean adding this:

    define(‘WP_HOME’,’http://galley6732.wpengine.com/’);
    define(‘WP_SITEURL’,’http://galley6732.wpengine.com/’);

    to the code in the wp-config.php file, yes. I placed the code where it states to do so here http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL because previously, I was getting redirected to the current website server when trying to log into my WP dashboard on the new server. Doing that fixed the redirect issue.

    No – that’s not what I meant. Try reviewing those steps again.

    It sounds like based on that, the issue comes from a WordPress installation and account having already been set up on the server by the hosting company. All I did initially is FTP all of my sites WordPress files/folders over the ones they had put in there for me.

    I suggest you scrap the new install and start again.

    I’ve imported the database file from my site to the new server and the site looks as it should. There are still a few tweaks I need to make, but it’s getting there. Thank you for your help.
