Non-blog themes? (14 posts)

I'm about to dive into the wonderful world of wordpress.org - I've had my own wordpress.com blog for some time now.

Anyway, I've parused the themes area of wordpress, and done searches online for wordpress themes ad nauseum.

I'm going to try and set up a very small, company website using wordpress.org. I'm looking for themes that aren't 'bloggy'. They are more artsy or corporate. I'm a little overwhelmed with all the choices out there, and since blogging is the primary use of wordpress, most themes are bloggy looking. So for every 200 themes I look at, maybe 1 or 2 aren't bloggy.

Does anyone have any recommendations for themes, or sources of themes that are more design or corporate, rather than blog?

    thanks all

Don't know if anything here will tickle your fancy but I mentioned a few news/magazine type themes in this thread,

    Hey LenK.

Thanks, but that still isn't it. Magazine type layouts are still fairly similar to blog requirements, with 'articles' and news that needs to be updated frequently.

I'm looking more for corporate, or design type themes which highlight work, but aren't constantly updated.

Just out of curiosity, how did you do your search? I know there are probably tens of thousands of themes out there, I'm just having a hard time finding the right genre that I'm looking for.

There's probably not a lot of themes in the area you're talking about. Most are designed to highlight continually changing content. That's sort of the whole point of having a CMS or CMS-like engine.

I think that WordPress is an amazing platform. It's very easy to use. Very easy to update content, add pages, with almost zero website admin knowledge.

it's because of this fact that I'd like to leverage what wordpress does really well - userfriendliness - into a basic, easy to manipulate, company website.

So theme makers out there, please make me some clean, more company or design oriented themes as opposed to blog or newsreel type themes. I'd pay for it! (And also be easy to find please...)

iThemes may have something more along the lines of what you're looking for. These are not free though.

you are asking quite a bit there... shy of $$ that is...

if you are comfortable with html, and have an idea of what you want in general (from looking around at sites not necessarily WP) you can build just about anything..

my suggestions? Take an existing theme, say classic embedded into the download...and copy it to the themes directory under a different name.. if you do this you won't have to reconstruct the php (which is my observation stumps most folks)... start whacking parts and adding what you want it to be... you will have a CMS in no time.. WP is fantastic for that..

here is how I butchered the classic theme for my needs... don't look anything like classic does it?

For that matter you can whip something up on your own - building themes is not that hard. Or modify an existing one. It's amazing what you can do with categories and custom fields.

Hey all, this is really great advice. Thank you! I do tinker around a little with HTML, still new to CMS though. I'm a strategy person, not so much a code person. (which is why I'm trying to leverage the great things that wordpress does).

Anyway, if you ever come across clean, more corporate or design (like photography, art, etc) themes, post them here. I'd be much obliged!

(And I'm happy to pay for a theme if it works for me. It saves me hours of 'tinkering').

    Check this out:

I highly recommend the free Mimbo. He has a pro version out that has some goodies, but the free version is very easy to customize and make look like a regular web site..

There's a very different look and feel theme I just stumbled on called "The Unstandard". You can check out how I've used it at 30dayLOA.com and I've left the link to the source site intact down the bottom. It may be more in line with what you're looking for... although I found this post while searching for tutorial sites on how to tweak it!
