Support » Alpha/Beta/RC » No thumbnails in the grid view of the media library

I updated one of my sites to 4.7RC and since then most of the thumbnails in the grid view of the media library and the media uploader no longer show up. Most of the images in this site are small-sized (250x250px approx). The only one that shows a thumbnail is bigger (500x600px). If I switch to the list view in the media library all thumbnails show up.

FYI, the thumbnail size is disabled in the media settings. Maybe this has something to do with it.

Try turning that back on 🙂 See if it works.

I entered 250×250 as the thumbnail size in the media settings, but I’m still getting plain document icons instead of thumbnails for most image files in the media library. I suppose that if I regenerate the thumbnails now, they will show up in the media library correctly. But, they appeared with no problems in 4.6 and lower with the thumbnail size disabled.

Can you make sure you’re on 4.7-RC1-39355 and that your server has imagick installed and active?

Yes, I’m on 4.7-RC1-39355 and my host has the imagick module active.

The images don’t appear in the Attachment Details popup either, although the files found in the URL field exist and can be accessed directly:

What happens if you upload a new image, does it show up (with the thumbnails enabled)?

The site has only the medium size active (with a size of 1024x500px). If I upload a big image, the thumbnail is generated with no problems, but I upload a small image (less than 200px in height or width) no thumbnail is generated.

Sorry, I have the thumbnail size active now, too (250×250 px)

I’ve tried 4.7RC in another site and it has the same problem. If I upload an image smaller than the smallest active size in the media settings, the plain document icon appears.

I’m afraid I’ve been unable to reproduce the issue my self, uploading images of any size, smaller or larger than the sizes set under Settings > Media, the thumbnail is always generated or the closest size is displayed.

Have you ensured you have all plugins disabled and are using a default theme such as Twenty Sixteen to rule out this being caused by plugin or theme code?

This is really weird. I’ve tried 4.7RC in another site with no plugins, the Twenty Fifteen theme and default media settings and the issue still persists. If I upload a 100x100px image the plain document icon is shown instead of a thumbnail. If I upload an image larger than 150x150px, a thumbnail is shown.

    Got it,

The image has to be lower than the thumbnail dimensions from Settings > Media in both width and height, if either or are the correct size it’s fine.

I’ve created a ticket for it at #38965.

I’ll mark this topic as resolved, this is done so that we can encourage further discussion of the matter on the ticket, and lets people know that the matter has been looked into and is either closed or has a ticket associated wit hit.
