Using WordPress 4.7-beta4-39340 to check out the new PDF thumbnail feature (which I think sounds fantastic), I failed to find any PDF thumbnail at all. Not in the media library, nor in the media attachment page.

    Uploaded several pdf’s to check

On a different site on same host, I use the Document Gallery plugin (which generates PDF thumbnails) and that works fine, so ghostscript is functional.

Am I missing something, or didn’t I get it right how the new PDF thumbnail features is supposed to work?

    Best regards

Do you know if you have Imagemagick on your server?

Hm, it seems not. In cPanel > PHP Selector > Extensions gmagick and imagick is turned off. I uses PHP7. Is imagick required?

Just enabled imagick and retried. Thumbs are now genereated. Then disabled imagick again. Thumbs are still generated. However, meeanwhile site was also updated to (4.7-RC1-39355), so…

Bottom line, thumbs are generated in the media library. I thought they would be shown at the media attachment page also? Was that wishful thinking?

imagick was (early on) a requirement. I can’t remember if it still is.

I thought they would be shown at the media attachment page also?

They should look like this: https://cloudup.com/cuJ5iLY9H5e

Imagick, ImageMagick, and Ghostscript support are the requirements as per https://make.wordpress.org/core/2016/11/15/enhanced-pdf-support-4-7/ 🙂

As the problem was a missing Imagick module, I’ll tag the thread as resolved seeing as we found the cause, this is done to help keep tabs on which topics still need initial attention and you can still provide feedback to the existing thread.

Thank you very much for your feedback!

Further testing shows that I need to have imagick enabled on my host. Then I get

    • Thumbnails in Media Library
    • Thumbnals in the Media Attachment page
    • Large thumbnails in the Media Attachment page

In short, its works as described on https://make.wordpress.org/core/2016/11/15/enhanced-pdf-support-4-7/

Wondering though, is it in any way possible to insert the thumbnail on a page or in a post? It would make sense to me, like inserting an image (or gallery of images). As of today, I’m still limited to insert a text link to the media attachment page it seems?

A great weekend to everyone 🙂
