featured images do not appear automatically with excerpts; you need to add some code:

edit loop.php, and add this <?php the_post_thumbnail(); ?> before the line where you changed the code to the_excerpt()

for details such as size see the linked codex chapter(s).

you might need to add some css to format the layout…
