And if you use these, and they break your site, you politely mail the devs with details, restore your backup and work with the official 1.5 release again.

What you DO NOT DO is post about it here.
You will get virtually NO SUPPORT for these builds.

Keep in mind that when using a nightly you are no longer a user, you are a tester. Calmly report bugs to the bug tracker. Discussion of nightly builds should go on the to-be-announced mailing list for testers. Testers should be following the changelog and commit timeline to know what they are getting into with each download. The nightly build download page will be updated with this information.

We appreciate those who test our nightly builds. You are a critical part of the success of WordPress and all open source software. However, the support forums are geared toward support of stable releases. So, let's move the beta test conversation to a mailing list. Watch for an announcement.

"I downloaded a nightly and still have all ten fingers." Something like that? ;-)

Does this mean we say "bye-bye" to the Beta Discussion forum here?

I don't see why. I'd say there's a distinct difference between using a nightly and posting here something like:

"Using .1alpha etc. -- When doing Blah it appears Blah doesn't work anymore."

    As opposed to:

"Using .1alpha etc. -- I need help doing Blah!"

    Kaf,
That's what the testers' list is for. Maybe I'm not understanding your point, but Ryan stated that the support forums are going to be for stable release help only.

Hmmm...just to clarify what is the beta discussion forum for? Are nightlies considered beta or alpha? will you be removing beta discussion?

    Kaf,
I realise that, bud. I hope I didn't come off sounding like an asshat. I was just trying to understand your point. Given the excellent help and advice you give on the support forum, I was/am genuinely interested in what you were trying to get across.

    Jinsan,
Alpha is a very-early stage of development. A beta version is further along the development cycle than alpha, but is still unstable. "Beta Discussion" pretty much covered any build that was not the official stable version.

    NM,

I think my point (in as much as I actually had one) was that using the Beta forum to report problems in regards to bugs and whatnot is quite different than expecting the kind of help one gets with the released versions. My reply was somewhat in relation to the posts of podz and ryan, and perhaps more convoluted than I intended.

The point, however, is quite moot.

As for coming across as an asshat, sometimes that's useful. But trust me, you didn't.

NM, I understand the difference between alpha and beta, I was jsut trying to understand at what point is a nightly build a beta release, if it even is a beta release, or are all nighlty builds regarded as alpha?

1.5 nighty release were considered beta and therefore were available for support, right? So what makes these nightlies different to say pre 1.5 final releases?

I'm really just looking for a logical distinction between what will get support and what will not get support, as I may run a copy jut for interest.
