Hey ecdtif,
We built Postmatic on phpmailer because after looking at other email-based plugins and talking with other WP professionals it seemed a better choice than relying on wp_mail.
Also, our technical roadmap calls for mailer functions not available in wp_mail. We don’t mean to cheat anyone. Sorry if you feel that way. Actually our intention is the opposite: we’ve put a lot of sweat and blood into creating a huge amount of technology which we are giving away for free. It kind of hurts to be called a cheapo cheat 🙁
Phpmail configuration vary from host to host. I’m not sure where your number of 30% comes from. If you are seeing numbers so low you should check with your web host and ask them why you are seeing deliverability problems.
Best,
Jason
Hey ecdtif,
We just released Postmatic 2 which supports sending mail via wp_mail. Give it a try if you’d like.
We’ll be happy to hear an updated review.

Thanks for the notification. I’ll try it maybe, when I find the time, but currently I’m 100% OK with the above mentioned solutions.
I didn’t see your previous response from 2 months ago until now:
With “cheapo cheat” I meant the fact that the free offering didn’t work reliably (couldn’t work reliably due to the mailing approach) and that you didn’t mention this on your page. (Of course, mentioning it, nobody would even try out the free plan…). That means, if a new user doesn’t make thorough mail tests he likely won’t notice until later that a part of the mails never got through. The 30% was an estimated number from my tests with some different mail addresses. As I said, it may be more or less.
But to honor your fix I’ll up my rating to 4 stars — without having tried the new version.
Tom
Hey Tom,
Thanks for the followup. We actually advertised that Postmatic uses phpmailer instead of wp_mail in all of our documentation and on our site. Sorry you missed it.
Thanks for your thoughts and updated review. Do give it a try sometime. The ability to reply to your post and comment notifications is pretty sweet.
Best,
Jason

No, I didn’t miss this. But mentioning it without explicitly mentioning the possible consequences of this is just not much worth for the non-technical user 😉
