NextGen by Photocrati — editing php to display captions

I recently edited the nextgen basic-gallry index.php template so that each image will open on it’s own page.

However, I had to turn off the caption template to do this.
Using template in the shortcode also messes it up.

I want to display captions, is there a way to edit the php code to display captions? I tried copying the snippet of code from the legacy caption template, but it looks like that’s not working with the basic-gallery template or I put it in the wrong place or something to that effect.
