Newly Uploaded & Published Products Do Not Appear on Front End

We upload new products every week, hundreds at a time, and have done so for a decade. All of a sudden today, a customer notified us that all of the products are missing from numerous categories on our website. There is nothing different about these products at all, except that they do not appear on the front end, they are only in admin.

See the Wire category? It’s empty. Yet there are clearly 91 products.

See the Switches category? It’s empty. Yet there are clearly 6 products.

Every single product is identical in settings to the other 4,000 on the website. Published, visible, categorized. Here’s an example:

Nothing at all different about it, except that it doesn’t exist.

We’ve cleared the Cloudflare cache (the only cache).
We’ve completely disabled the Cloudflare cache.
We’ve reset the permalinks.
We’ve made no plugin changes since uploading.
We’ve reset every setting in the Woocommerce tools page.
We disabled and reenabled Jetpack.
We disabled and reenabled Autoptimize.

And what’s even more bizarre? As an admin, when logged in, sometimes we can see every product 100% perfectly on the front end:

Yet opening the same exact category page in a private browser window shows an empty category page:

Even more bizarre is that all of the recently uploaded products appear on the “New Products” page of the website using the built-in shortcode, but they do not appear there for anyone but admins (and no, we do not use product visibility plugins).

We’ve googled this and cannot find any possible cause or solution, and this isn’t our first rodeo, so this is really confusing.

Thank you for reaching out!

Could you please check and confirm that all of your plugins and the theme are updated to their latest versions?

This kind of issue is usually caused by a conflict with your theme or with another plugin.

The best way to determine this is to:

Temporarily switch your theme to Storefront
Disable all plugins except for WooCommerce
Repeat the action that is causing the problem

If you’re not seeing the same problem after completing the conflict test, then you know the problem was with the plugins and/or theme you deactivated. To figure out which plugin is causing the problem, reactivate your other plugins one by one, testing after each, until you find the one causing conflict. You can find a more detailed explanation on how to do a conflict test here.

Before you start

First, please make sure you have a good backup in place of your full site and database. Most hosting companies have this included in the subscription, but you could also consider using a service like Jetpack. If something goes wrong, it’s nice to know that you can restore your site.
Second, I would suggest installing a plugin called Health Check & Troubleshooting. This is a plugin developed by the WordPress community, and it allows you to disable plugins without affecting your current site visitors.

I understand your confusion; it is confusing.

To further check into this and know more about your setup, kindly provide us the following:

Your System Status: You can find it via WooCommerce > Status. Select ‘Get system report’ and then ‘Copy for support’. Once you do this, you can paste your response here.
Fatal Error Log: Share a copy of any fatal error log found under WooCommerce > System Status > Logs (if available).

I disabled every single plugin on the website manually, one by one to test further.

When all plugins are disabled, the problem is not there, all products appeared.

After re-enabling over 50 plugins one by one, until the problem returned, nothing ever happened. The problem isn’t there, and I’ve re-enabled every single plugin.

So now I can’t figure out what happened…al I did was disable plugins, and re-enable them.

Hello,

It is great that the plugin conflict test helped solve the issue for now, but intermittent issues are definitely hard to troubleshoot.

I would suggest you check what plugins were updated in the days leading up to you receiving the report and, if this happens again, maybe consider disabling those first when testing for conflicts again.

I’m assuming you meant to say you will be disabling auto-updates.

Yes, that is a good step to be taken to avoid such situations. That way you’ll have more control over your website.

BTW, even before manually updating any plugins, it is a good idea to have a full backup of your site and database , to be on the safe side.

Sorry to hear the issue is back.

In order for us to get a better idea of your setup, could you please share a copy of your site’s System Status?

You can find it via WooCommerce > Status. Select “Get system report” and then “Copy for support”. Once you’ve done that, paste it here in your response.

We also would like to take a closer look at your site’s logs.

1. Go to WooCommerce > Status > Logs
2. In the top right corner, open the drop-down and select the latest fatal error log, then click view to load it. Here’s what that looks like: https://d.pr/i/tCljQd.
3. Copy/paste the log into your response on this thread.

Hello,

Sorry to hear about this. Regarding the system report it has failed and pending actions:

Failed: 29
Pending: 10

Can you head to WooCommerce → Status → Scheduled Actions → Pending, then please run them manually so that they can be executed properly, and allow some time for them to update.

The WP Crontrol plugin can give you more insights about the cron errors: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-crontrol/

Also, you can use WP Staging for quickly spinning up a new test site, in order to perform the tests without touching the productions site.

Let us know what you find after running the pending actions.

Hi Igor!

I manually ran all 19 pending tasks but it stays at 10 remaining no matter how many times I run them.

I cannot run the failed tasks, there is no option to do that.

This didn’t fix the issue at hand. Uploaded products are invisible, until you manually edit each one, one by one, and then they magically appear.

Aside from clearing the cache from Cloudflare can you also make sure the cache on these must-use plugins is purged? Must-use plugins do not show in the default list of plugins so you will want to contact HostGator directly to purge the cache.

Once you’ve set up the staging site as suggested above by Igor can you update all plugins? I hope the issue can be traced back to one or more plugins not being up to date.

You could also enable debug logging in WordPress. To do that, edit the wp-config.php file in the root folder of the site on the server. Add this:

define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true );

You must insert this BEFORE /* That's all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */ in the wp-config.php file.

As errors are logged, they should appear in wp-content/debug.log. You can open this file in a text editor and go from there.
