Newbie – RSS Feed Question

I am new to WordPress 2.0 (erm, my site has been up a couple hours – that’s how new)…

A contact requires me to set up RSS Feed to my blog – and I haven’t a clue where to begin…

Does WordPress have away of creating the RSS XML file by default – and does it automatically link it it the RSS Links on the site…

OR do you have create the RSS Feed XML manually? How do you do that for WordPress?

Yes, wordpress will generate an RSS feed for posts on your site.

The specific url depends on your permalink structure.
Where is your blog ?

This is the default address to the WordPress blog’s RSS feed, sitemainaddress.com/?feed=rss where sitemainaddress.com is the address to your blog. For example, if your blog is at http://www.myblog.com/index.php, then your RSS would be http://www.myblog.com/?feed=rss.

There is also an automatically generated RSS feed for all your comments, a feed for the comments on each post, and I think for each category as well.

I’ve tried clicking at the RSS link at the bottom of the site… but it appears to be broken?

The path in the hyperlink points to:

feed:http://linuxweb-1.griffin.net.uk/~rtfmed/?feed=rss2

Any ideas why this might be broken?

What you are seeing is the recent implementation of the relatively new feed: protocol.

Okay so for my site, the RSS feed should be at…
http://www.japannewbie.com/?feed=rss

Correct? How can I check that to see if it is working? I’m TOTALLY new to RSS…

It is indeed.
The above is RSS 0.92. You also have the RSS2.0 feed:
http://www.japannewbie.com/?feed=rss2
and an Atom feed
http://www.japannewbie.com/?feed=atom
In Firefox you can click the RSS feeds and you’ll see an ugly page of text – that’s the feed. (The Atom page will not do that but just ignore that).

As for checking, you could register at Bloglines or Feedburner and put your feed there – they will check it.

You could also use this plugin:
http://www.orderedlist.com/articles/wordpress_feedburner_plugin/
which will send your feeds through a Feedburner account which you’ll need to setup (it’s free) and then you can track how many people are reading the feed. WP cannot do that.

Thanks for the info!

I’m subscribed to this myspace-like service, that asks for my blog’s RSS URL. The example is shown as… http://foo.bar.com/index.rdf. Is there anything in that RDF format that I could pass to it from WP?

Or should the RSS2 http://www.japannewbie.com/?feed=rss2 feed work for this purpose as well?

I’m asking, cause this service I have sent the =rss url to isn’t picking it up it seems.

Is there something you have to do to send out an “update” to sites that are looking at the rss link? Or should they notice any updates automatically?

Sorry if I’m destroying the terminology here…
