Support » Fixing WordPress » Newbie: How to make post only display first few lines?

  • Where do I make each post only display the first few lines and then have a “read more” link to the rest of the post?

I have searched this forum and got a couple of items but they seem to be for pros, and I don’t quite understand them.

Do I control this in the theme? Or can I set this somewhere in WordPress when I log in? I have admin access but when I look through the “settings” there don’t seem to be a setting for this.

If something need to be done on the theme or the CSS etc. can someone give me somewhere to go for a tutorial or something like that to learn how to do this?

  • in the theme… most likely index.php

look for the_content and swap the_excerpt

the_excerpt will work, but, unfortunately, the most graceful way to do this is to go back and make some changes to the posts. Either a) edit each post to include the more tag where you want it to cut or b) copy the portion you want to appear into the excerpt box. the_excerpt, by itself, cuts based on character count and often cuts posts in the middle of words, so be sure you specify where the cut should be.

Thanks! So I can go into the index.php page and change “the_content” to “the_excerpt”?

And if I put what I want to be in the excerpt by hand into the “excerpt” box when I post, the excerpt that I put in should appear?

That’s seems doable – the post can’t be edited manually because someone is going to be posting, and she has about 10 post a day to do in different website. But the excerpt method will work if she can just copy and paste whatever she wants to be in there.

I will try this out. If what I said is not what need to be done, please correct! Thanks again.
