Support » Installing WordPress » New User Getting Started

  • I am a new user trying to setup my blog but there are a couple details I am unclear on which may sound stupid to you tech wizards but here we go.

I downloaded, tailored and uploaded the wordpress package to my domain. I did have to put it in a folder entitled /blog because this is just a sideproject for my site and not the primary use for the domain. Will this make a difference? Also I have a lite hosting package. Do I need something with more complicated support? I keep hearing people referring to a MySQL database and I’m wondering if thats one other thing I need to get or install.

The error I currently get when I try to go to the wp-admin/install.php file is:

    “Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?
If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.”

I hope these questions are enough to find a solution. Thanks.
