• So our new website was under development for a long time and then she stopped responding and just never completed the site. There are several challenges, but I want to try to understand how the system works so I don’t have to rely on someone else to fix the messes.

For instance, my homepage used to have a lot of copy/text, but one change made all of the text not visible anymore. I have no idea where to go to change the page or see what setting affected the fact that the text is being covered up by images or just no longer visible. Its not exactly straightforward in my opinion (themes, pages, etc.)????

The page is located at demo.dynadome.com

  • The site looks pretty good to me from what I could see, except maybe the Recent Projects area. But from what you’ve described the first two places that I’d look are for a plugin that was deactivated or perhaps deleted or the Appearance > Widgets area to see if there’s a widget that’s controlling the area that’s missing. It’s a little un-intuitive since the text found under Pages > Home page probably won’t appear on the front page of the site.

Without logging in, that’s about all I can guess at for the moment. Does either of those get you closer?

Hi Julie. I appreciate your feedback, but this doesn’t help me. You are correct that the Recent Projects area is not displaying correctly, but also the text anywhere on the page is not visible. I went to the Fusion Builder and I see all my text there, but I just cannot seem to understand how the various layers work within WordPress. How do I know which plugins are being used and which ones are downloaded with the intent of being used, but just end up as clutter? Why are there themes and appearance differences that are not defined or no hierarchy shown? I cannot believe how messy a WordPress site can be on the backend. It just seems like no organization or process is followed. If someone comes in after the original programmer to add or modify or simply make adjustments, without proper direction or guidance, they are in trouble!

Is this really how all sites are developed and “organized”?

    A couple of points:

As you use a Avada, a commercial theme and need support, please use their official support channel. We feel they are best equipped to support their products.

Second, WP sites can be elegant or they can be messy. It depends on the theme and the developer and the design. You might considering hiring a developer to finish this site. The “official” recommendation is to use http://jobs.wordpress.net. I prefer to recommend that you find a local WordPress meetup (check meetup.com), go to a meetup, and sit down with a bunch of folks. Consider it both a hiring interview and a chance to ask some questions that might help you solve some of the issues on the site. If you work with someone local, who you’ve met face to face, it’s a lot easier to work through issues.

Third, as some one who as come in after the original dev vanished (or was vanished), there’s nothing worse that trying to figure out “What the ^&*( was he thinking?” 🙂
