New role not working?

I set up a new role on my wordpress site called “testrole”. However when I assign a user to it and try to login to the private members only area of the site I get the message “Sorry, you have no privileges to see this content”

If I set the capabilities so that they match a standard role “contributor” it still doesn’t work even though the contributor one does.

Can you give me an idea as to what I am doing wrong and why any new roles I create don’t work?

I am using the Graphene theme.
