• I can create new pages and don’t get any errors from WP in the process but when I try to view the new page, it doesn’t exist, although it shows up as an item in the control panel. This is probably some kind of permissions error but I can’t figure it out. Please please help.

  • pintsize: On which page of the admin interface you see the page appearing after creating it?

The new page shows up in the list on Page Management, and it shows up when I click Edit. But when I click View, I get a 404 error.

Please, don’t be offended if this sounds like a simple statement – but I’ve seen the mistake made before. Are you Publishing the Page? If you only clicked Save rather than Publish by accident then you won’t be able to see the Page if you click View in the Manage Pages admin.

No offense taken, yes I am publishing the page.

Here’s a thought: this blog was originally in a subdirectory but later I moved it up to root and deleted the original subdirectory. Is it possible that WP is trying to create the page in a directory that doesn’t exist anymore, and that’s why I’m getting the 404 errors?

Just when through the steps again — even when I click Publish, I can’t view the page although I can edit it.

    So weird…

I am having exactly this same problem and I also suspect that it is a permissions issue… Can anyone point to a solution for this issue? Thanks very much!

I also have this issue. All old pages work fine. All old and new posts work fine. htaccess checks out as fine (the normal, default htaccess rules that wp always uses, with no extra rules in there). But creating new pages (and yes, Publishing them), renders 404 errors for the page. They exist. They are in the admin and can be edited, but when viewed, they are 404’s.

    Some examples:

Old page that works fine: http://www.seo-scoop.com/about-seo-scoop/

    New page that 404s:
    http://www.seo-scoop.com/about-seo-scoop/privacy-policy/

In admin, under manage pages, it is there:
1309 Privacy Policy DazzlinDonna 2008-03-07 4:24 pm View Edit Delete

    It is set to Published.

This happened a while back when I upgraded to a newer version, but I don’t recall exactly when. I’ve just lived with it until now, but now I really need to get it fixed. I’ve scoured the boards, and seen others with issues, but nothing resolved.

I would think that since new posts handle permalinks fine, that new pages should too, no?

If you need ANY other info, I’m happy to provide it. You won’t get any negative attitude from me. 🙂

ADDED: I should add that this is on a mediatemple server, and I have another wp blog running on the same server, with no issues whatsoever. standard apache/php/mysql setup.

    WP version 2.3.3

I can’t edit my post or I would, but that url i gave you is wrong – still doesn’t work – but wrong nevertheless.

http://www.seo-scoop.com/privacy-policy/ is the one that i meant to post above as the url for the new page that 404s.

I’m also having the same problem. I also have some problems with my trackbacks. Are the problems connected? I think the problems started after a uppgrade from 1.very-old something to 2.2, 2.3 something…

Celebrimbor, my problems also started when I upgraded to 2.something. I’ve deactivated all plugins to make sure one of those wasn’t causing the problem, and it’s none of them. Problem exists even with no plugins activated.

I’ve also just noticed that the new tagging structure does the same thing. So mysite.com/tag/anything returns 404.

Also, I’ve upgraded to 2.5 and the error still persists.

I experience the same issue, I can’t find a way around it for now. Anyone have a solution already?

Okay, I found the source of the problem for me. I had configured the permalinks to be clean, but my hosting account doesn’t support clean url’s. Just setting the permalinks o default and creating a new page works just fine.

but i can’t turn my permalinks off, i need pretty URL’s for the search engines:)

I still have this problem, can’t publish pages… but mine don’t even show up in the page management area. tried publishing SEVERAL TIMES. this is frustrating:(

    any help is much appreciated;)
