Support » Themes and Templates » New & needing help with Themes and posts/pages

  • Hi,

I just bought a site domain from a independent host who uses WordPress.org
I wanted to use Suffusion but cannot work out how to make the Header look nice so I thought I would buy a theme like Salutation. It’s supposed to be a wordpress + buddypress theme but I can’t find it in wordpress. Also would like to know if I go back to suffusion can I add a social network to it and also for both suffusion and salutation can I add a shop (cart) ie. sell things on the site as well. Very confused and would luv to be pointed in the direction of a tutorial to show me how to add pages/posts to make them look nice. I want a website not a blog site. Many thnx in advance for any help. Thnx from the LOST one 🙂

  • You don’t need to buy a theme to have a great looking site. Suffusion can be modified or customized to do almost anything. Paid themes are not available on this site. Be aware that paid themes are not generally supported here — so make sure the vendor has good support for the theme. There are plug-ins for ecommerce that work with most all current themes. All themes can be “websites” not blogs — you just have to use a page, not a post.

For basic information, start reading the Codex — especially getting started, etc.

There are many video tutorials on using WordPress out there on YouTube and elsewhere — some free, some not. Google can help you find them.

Another option that requires less work and technical knowledge would be to use a WordPress.COM hosted site. They do a lot of the backend work, but you have to pay for some options and you simply can’t do all the things you can do with a self-hosted site. So it’s a trade-off which may or may not be what you want.

Thank you very much, I have been sooo lost. I actually started one on the WordPress.com site bc I didn’t know what I was doing and thought I was logging onto the other one. I just wonder why Themes are advertised as “WordPress” Premium Theme if they don’t belong to wordpress???

I really appreciate the links. I think I’ll stick with Suffusion bc it’s free until I can work out what I’m doing.

You’ll probably see a lot of me on here 🙂

A lot of people REALLY like Suffusion — based on comments here. So that’s probably a good choice. Vendors use “WordPress” because the themes ARE WP — it’s like using “Windows” or “Mac” in describing third party software designed for those platforms.

Lots of people start out very lost — but just keep reading and learning and you’ll get there. Patience will help. Good luck.
