• I’ve already written about this in message: support/topic/58425, but the more I research this, the more I realize that this is not an isolated incident, but perhaps indicative of a more systemic problem.

I’ve found a slew of other messages all relating to 404s on posts, categories and archive links. Some are fixed upon changing themes, some aren’t. There’re a couple of patches floating around that appear to fix one kind of 404 problem, but many other problems exist. They all seem similar, in that they partially work.

I need to make a decision PDQ on whether to blow it all away and go back to 1.5.2.

I don’t need anything fancy, just all the features to work. I have a plain outta-the-box install that doesn’t work. Well, the admin stuff works fine, just not the actual posts.

Any thoughts on patches, fixes, or downgrading soon would be welcome.

    Thanks,

    Kev

  • I’m getting the same thing. I never had problems with installing 1.5, but with 2.0 I got 404s. and 500 internal server errors when I tried the .zip package.

then I tried the .tar.gz package and got part way through the installation (it said it installed, but the db tables weren’t generated). After inviting me to see the main page, it was now an internal 500 error.

I flipped from firefox to IE and all the same pages turned up as 404s, rather than 500s.

I checked my web logs and it says that
directory ../../wp-admin has rights to be written by others.

I did a 775 chmod of the above directory but still can’t display.

I’m now trying on a different server to see if there was some configuration change that my ISP committed, that’s preventing this from installing.

I still can’t see anything obvious that I’m doing wrong.

I just realized that line 9 / 10 in the config file is wrapped. I added a line break around

// Only numbers, letters, and underscores please!

and this seemed to resolve it: the script was choking and reading the line that was improperly wrapped (possibly by myself:

// Only numbers, letters, and underscores
    please!

so it was choking on the “!” which was no longer commented out.

It’s now working on my original server, but I didn’t go back to the .zip version
