When trying to Network Activate, we get a fatal error message and it fails. Previously, we only had it activate on certain sites we wanted to delegate access to other campus partners. To help increase site security, we’ve turned it on across all sites. The only way I was able to accomplish this was by using an additional plugin called Multisite Plugin Manager. This plugin allowed me to activate across all sites and also, strangely, also gave me access to the network settings. I was then able to set global options and set exceptions on a few sub-sites that needed custom access settings. But logging in seems very sluggish and some error log entries seemed to point to the way we have Authorizer installed as a contributing factor. Also, having activated the plugin as described above, on every sub-site, we get an admin error message stating: “Can’t reach CAS server. Please provide accurate CAS settings if you intend to use it.” But we do have the CAS setting set and people can log in (albeit very slowly). I had tried to deactivate and uninstall/re-install the plugin unsuccessfully. I even purged the database of any auth_settings entries.

That’s odd, we’ve got it network-enabled on several multisite installations without any problems. Can you look into the web server logs to see what the specific error message is when trying to network enable? That might help narrow it down…maybe a conflict with some other plugin.

Re: Can’t reach CAS server, make sure that the web server actually can reach the CAS server over the network. Try ssh’ing to the server and doing a curl or wget request of the CAS server to make sure the networking, and possibly any firewalls blocking access, are set up properly. Your description of symptoms almost sounds like a network issue to me.

I was able to network activate again. Didn’t do anything different. Some strange things going on. I’ll have to review the network issues with our systems folks. We have Authorizor installed on other WP sites with no issue. It’s just our main site 🙁
