I am building a price comparison site using woocommerce and external products to link to my affiliate deep links. I have one product for each affiliate (with no info in it) and these are parented by the grouped product that the user will view. This works well.
However, there are options for each product, i.e. they come in white or black. I can't use product variants for this as these need to be external products, so I wondered whether it would be possible to have groups of groups. i.e.
Grouped Product A -> Black -> Affiliate 1 -> Affiliate 2 -> White -> Affiliate 1 -> Affiliate 2 Grouped Product B -> Black -> Affiliate 1 -> Affiliate 2 -> White -> Affiliate 1
... and so on.
It appears that with some hacking, this almost works but I'm wondering if there is a proper way of doing it or whether this is an issue with my theme.
On a grouped product, I can't set a parent product through the edit screen as there is no option under advanced, but if I set the post_parent field in wp_posts and then edit/update/view the product, I can see a link to the second level product. This link is an 'add to cart' type link though, not a 'view product' type that you would normally get with grouped products.
Is there a way to achieve what I am looking to do? With guidance, I am pretty happy with hacking code, but far better if this wasn't necessary. Should I log this as a feature request? What sort of support is there for this elsewhere?
