    Hi Forumsters!
    Spent hours already looking for themes and trying various ones out. Tried various filter settings from Dashboard and here on the .org (options differ) and still no luck.
    I’m looking for exceptionally plain and simple theme to visually echo art photo books: simple white page with centered photo and tiny caption. Responsive to computer and various viewport sizes. Footer for copyright notice and search.
    Don’t need header, social, sales, just a blank page with photo and caption blog entries, RSS feed. That’s about it.
    Does such a thing exist without having to spend days learning to create my own theme or hours fiddling with settings?

  • Hey, Dave! Hmm, what about this one: https://wordpress.org/themes/alternate-lite/

    gilbertank, thanks for the tip! I’ve tried it out and there’s no caption and the photos, ahem, are not displaying unless I click the title of the post to get the post on one page. No setting for how many blog posts appear on the home page. Would also need to tweak the CSS for typography, no biggie there. There’s still maybe too much space at the top of the home page but maybe CSS’able or maybe ok.
    I suppose I’ll search keyword “lite” and see if anything comes up.

    Well I tried another ‘lite’ theme and it also has no caption and the photos don’t display on the blog page. Up til now most themes I tried have no problem with the photos.

    Have you looked at the Elementor Hello theme?

    This is the starter theme for many, many themes, including those written by Automattic.

    Hi dtwiss, thanks for the suggestion. I must admit I am a bit lost with that. To use the Hello theme itself one must also have the Elementor app in order to tweak it? Which is a self-standing app or something that works in a browser?
    I haven’t been fully following the latest with WordPress and it seems a fair bit has changed since I set up a handful of small sites years ago!

    My understanding is the Hello theme was built specifically for use with the Elementor page builder (it may work with Gutenburg, not sure). When you’re editing a page, there would be an “Edit with Elementor” option at the top and you’d use the ‘drag-n-drop’ builder Elementor provides.

    So, you’d install:
    Theme = Hello
    Plugin = Elementor

    Thanks Mr. Stern for the input and being a team volunteer!
    Underscores looks interesting–it’s a sort of theme template with all the basics provided is that right? One would still need to know enough about php and others to actually modify it?
    I am fairly ok with html5 and CSS but not much beyond that.
    What might be cool is a basic theme tweaker questionnaire. Something that runs thru the options and asks questions, provides examples, and then spits out a theme. I guess that wouldn’t work with the fancier kind of sites but for a simple site like I’m looking for, maybe it would do the trick.
    Or even this new block editing mode-I don’t see a way to say, start from the top, and type a number or slide a slider to adjust size of the header for example, and then work down the page. The Customize feature starts in that direction but it’s implemented differently by different themes. Some have deep level of control others not.
    Sigh.

    By golly there are lots of these ‘page builder’s. It appears Elementor is a couple of Plug-ins that work within WP. From their site it appeared to be something to download separately.
    But are these builders for sites composed of pages, like the old days, or sites consisting of blog posts with the option of static pages?
    hm.

    Mainly CSS, unless you want to change functionality.

    Hi All, I was hoping to make progress on this today but the options are a bit overwhelming. This Elementor is way more than I need and too confusing interface and unclear explanation. But as noted my WP knowledge is not up to date so that’s probably why I’m not following their explanation/interface. Elementor reminds me a bit like Dreamweaver and the visual web site building apps of ye olde days.
    Anyway thanks for the help I’m hitting the Pause button for now. I’m subscribed to this so if you think of something helpful I’ll get the notification.
    G’day!
