• My husband, who is now deceased, had a blog using Word Press. I would like to discontinue his blog, but do not want to lose the text content. I have copied the blog files to my local computer, but need advice on how to find and open the text files. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • The content of the blog is stored in the site’s database. You would need a backup copy of the database to archive the content safely.

Could you explain where I can find the database?

it’s where the site is hosted. you’ll need to login to the hosting account and use the database tools available to download a copy.

there are wordpress plugins you could use if the site is still live…

It’s held on the remote host server but I’m afraid you’ll need to contact the hosting company to get details of how to access it.

May I ask what you intend to do with the site’s content? Only a database dump isn’t going to be of much use in terms of being able to read the content on your local computer without a lot of unnecessary extra work. There may be other, non-WordPress, solutions that we could recommend.

@theotherlebowski: actually I was wondering if something like a site leecher/mirror app might be more appropriate so that the whole site could be stored as a static .html site suitable for placing on CD. Can’t say I’ve tried this on a WP site, though.

not something i’ve tried either, just had a quick google to see if anyone else had and there’s nothing out there…

if the site’s still live then one of these would do the job with little fuss but otherwise i reckon it’s a case of dump the database out to a file like an excel document and then just looking for the records with the posts in.

again, i’ve never done it! if you’re feeling bold you could set up your own local server but that’s a bit of a procedure…

    sweet 😀 a couple of new toys…

I would export the data directly from WordPress.

    1) Go to: Dashboard -> Tools -> Export
    2) Select “All Content”
    3) Click “Download Export File”

This will ensure that you have the data in a usable format, for future use.

I used one of the site leechers. Thank you for the assistance and suggestions.
