This is a complex issue, so hang in with me here while I try to explain.

We have a documentation team posting content. Once published, the posts cannot be edited. Instead, they have to be cloned and then sent back through our compliance publishing process.

The issue is that much of this content needs to link to other content that has not yet been published. We had hoped we could use a “placeholder link” (a page that basically says “this content is in progress.”) and then, once the destination page is published, use the link checker to find that link text and change the destination URL to the correct, published URL.

The problem, as I discovered today, is that when I search based on the link text, the placeholder URL shows up only once … with “multiple links” showing up in the Text field. I’m guessing that if I change the URL here, I will be changing it for all the posts that have used the placeholder.

Is there a way to list all the posts that have used that URL and then correct an individual post so that it does not affect all the others? I thought this plugin would be answer to the issue of correcting links after a post has been published.

Please note: I am the documentation team manager and not site admin. I can make no changes, and can’t allow access to the site which is on an internal intranet for security purposes.

I hope you have a positive answer. Thanks …

  • Yes: I have a solution for you.
You ask your editors to add a random changing number of the placeholder link:
    http://placeholder-9896565

    Now all links are different.

To get them all, in the search box you type *placeholder*

This will show all links that include placeholder.
