• Hello everyone,

I administrate in a support group for people coming off medication. I created a wordpress site to organize resources, articles, member stories, etc. I’ve had a wordpress before but it was only used as a blog.

So in a sense I’d like this to be more like a functional website to organize everything. I looked at a theme called DirectoryPress and it was really cool but cost way too much. I’m trying to do this all without paying extra fees.

    Here’s an example of a site I like: http://recovery-road.org/
It’s very clean, organized and I love the drop down menus.

    My site is here: http://www.benzorecovery.com

I’m not sure how to organize it. Would I make pages for every different resource I wanted to add? How would I make subpages? What are categories for and how do I put a page INTO a category?

Are there any decent plugins to make this into a nice website?

    Thank you.

  • I’d suggest looking at themes on this page — they are all good quality and free — and supported here:

Not all commercial (paid) themes are better at all, so don’t worry about that. In fact, some are much harder to use or may use spammy stuff hidden in them.

Plug-ins are only relevant if you want a specific functionality that’s not in your theme.

This will help you get started on your site:

Unless you use a Plugin to alter standard WordPress behaviour, Pages cannot be put in Categories. Instead, you can create a parent-child relationship between Pages, which is probably what you mean by “subpages”. That creates the typical web site hierarchy of web pages, where the top level WordPress Pages (parents) are, conceptually, the main categories, and child Pages are subcategories, and their children are sub-subcategories, etc.

Most modern Themes, such as the default Twenty Eleven theme (you are using Twenty Ten), can provide the drop-down menus for you based on that hierarchy of Pages. As well as a sidebar if you want to show the whole menu structure there too.

The site you are looking at is not using a Theme in the WordPress Repository, so I’m not sure which of several it is using that has a directory called /agency/.

You can do something almost as nice with Twenty Eleven, which is how I would suggest starting. Once you have something started, then you could look through the WordPress Theme Repository for a free theme (and one that has been updated in the last year or so) that you like better than Twenty Eleven.

Excellent! Thank you both so much for your help.

Good luck with it — it’s a very worthy undertaking IMHO! Post back when you need help.

Here’s a bit more info about finding good themes:
