Need help setting up post categories

I hate to dig up this issue again because I have just read a ton of posts addressing this same question all of which seem to be missing steps to help me accomplish this.

Here is what I want to do:
My site has a static home page and I have assigned ‘daily deals’ to be the blog. I have also created two main categories 1) daily deals and 2) free spot. I would like to write a page that will be able to show the posts from the free spot category.

I am pretty new to wordpress, so a thorough explanation is needed. All the other posts addressing this type of question are short and basically say to edit some coding in the templates but I don’t know which templates need to be edited. Thanks in advance!
